Cyberbullying and Bullying - Two Things All Kids Should Understand
Back in April 2007 I posted in support of Kathy Sierra who was the victim of cyberbullying. Little did I know I would be even more concerned about a similar type of bullying with different dynamics: bullying by kids in grade school. Bullying has impacted the life of one of my kids, but I am lucky to be in a school district that is completely supportive of finding a resolution. After it happened to my family, I started talking to friends with kids in all different schools (from fancy private to public schools) and they all had stories. Then I noticed many children's books on the topic, which made me realize every child should be informed about bullying.
So I started looking into the issue of bullying and came to the conclusion that even though healthcare for children is a big concern, social skills training and mental health support is also important but lacking in an overall coordinated manner. Just yesterday bullying was the topic on NPR's Forum with Micheal Krasny. One of the guests was Michelle Lawrence, superintendent of the Berkeley Unified School District who is involved with Berkeley Unified’s Stop Bullying Project. I included the mp3 of that show and other interesting links below. I would be very interested in hearing how other parents deal with bullying in schools.
Here is a the MP3 version of the NPR's Forum with Micheal Krasny:
On the bully policy site I found a link to a blog called Bullycide Mom Speaks Out.
Unfortunately some kids are also taking their bullying online, here is info on cyberbullying AT schools: Stop Cyberbullying.org, Throwing the book at cyberbullies and from our own local Stanford University School of Education - Technology Meets its Match: Cyber Bullying Film Targets Teens.
