Every year... we eat!
Every Christmas eve my family eats. We take this eating very, very seriously. We have a set menu that never changes. It's a six or seven course orgy that we all look forward to for a whole year.
We start with oysters, continue on with fois gras and challah toast triangles, move on to smoked salmon and whole wheat toast circles. From there the meal takes a serious turn as we tuck into our Christmas turkey with mashed potatoes, carrot pudding, green beans, stuffing and gravy. You would think that by now the six of us would be stuffed beyond all possibility, but we make room for our elaborate cheese course. We top the whole smorgasbord with home made yuletide logs. (Two, one coffee or praline flavored and one chocolate.) The whole meal is liberally doused with various tasty wines.
Every year we do this, and every year at least one of us is sick during the night. It doesn't matter. The three days of cooking and prepping are worth the 5 minutes of discomfort. We love our annual tradition. We love how it reminds us of the Christmases of our childhoods.
