Sarah's husband had passed away a week earlier on Christmas day due to complications with lung cancer. Sarah was home alone when two men tried to break into her mobile home. She was able to put a couch in front of the door and called 911. When she was on the phone she told the 911 operator that she had two guns in her hand and asked if she could use them.
"I've got two guns in my hand. Is it OK to shoot him if he comes in this door?" McKinley asked the dispatcher.- Denver Post
One of the intruders, Justin Shane Martin 24, died at the scene after sustaining a gun shot wound when he entered the house. It was reported that he had a knife when he broke through the door. His accomplice, 29 year old Dustin Louis Stewart, ran away after the incident. He was later found and charged for his part in the crime.
Investigators found that the 18 year old mother had used deadly force to protect herself and small child. No charges were filed against her. In the state of Oklahoma it is legal to use deadly force when protecting ones life. The moment the intruder entered the house and had a knife she was justified in her protection of herself and use of a gun.
The intruders were rumored to have burglarized the home looking for prescription medications. The only thing they got that day was a look down the barrel of a gun. One was left dead and the other is facing a long time in prison for his part in the fatal incident.
