Occupy Wall Street: Resistance and Pizza
Is this a modern update of The French Revolution? Is the divide between the “haves” and the rest of the population so great and big that it will lead to storming the bastions of the wealthy? Are the cracks in our values-insensitive materialistic system starting to give way to the deeper recognition that we are all connected and no one wins unless we all do?
Finding the way out of our materialistic misery (is anybody really happy?) is a leadership mandate. Leadership in the 21sty Century is a collective rather than an individual issue. We all really know that no one man or woman will come and save us from the walls that divide us. The lack of one person leading “the troops” is obvious at the park in New York City where some are camping out for, well, however long it takes, so they say.
The hardy souls who are taking on the brunt of the protest are being supported with good wishes, live streaming, and pizza. In fact, so many have sent pizza; (remember Dominos delivers) that they have asked to put a hold on this staple of modern day revolutionaries and asked for other supplies instead.
The media is asking for clarity, they want to know what in the world they are fighting for, peacefully and respectfully, albeit, still fighting for something. It takes a bit of peeling away of the artichoke (better than an onion, since an artichoke has a heart) to see that there are three main categories and they all come together into the realm of relationships.
1. New ways of organizing defective social and institutional organizations
2. New ways of challenging faulty relationships between men and women, racial, ethnic groups, economic classes, and even between humans and the ecological system
3. New ways of transforming patterned, conditioned manners in which we look at how life is to be lived
There will be many voices calling out in this time of uprising. It may be a short flash in the pan or start to have strong legs; it depends on how willing we all are to stand up and be counted. No, we do not all have to go to Manhattan, nor to any of the other rallies. It does matter that we talk with each other and dig down to talk about the type of planet we want and need.
Pizza is great and bringing our voices into the mix is even better.
