Is Mike Huckabee a Natalie Portman-Hater?
Politico.com was first to hop on the story of Mike Huckabee discussing Natalie Portman about being a single mom. This happened during an interview on February 28th on The Michael Medved Show , where the host was first to bring up Natalie Portman and her acceptance speech at the Academy Awards. In her speech, Portman thanks her fiancé for giving her, her greatest role yet, as a mother. Speaking to that, Mr. Medved says, “He didn’t give her the most wonderful gift, which would be a wedding ring! And it just seems to me that sending that kind of message is problematic.” At that point, Huckabee says, among other things,
“You know Michael, one of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine.' But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.”
As per the usual with the mainstream media, they take only one or two of these sentences, quoting out of context. The poor man didn’t even bring it up, he just commented on it. What boggles my mind is that the headlines are reading, “Mike Huckabee Blasts Natalie Portman” and such. What I didn’t personally like was his generalization of single moms, calling them “very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job….” Etc etc.Continued on the next page
