Gay Marriage Lands In New York
There’s a party still going on in New York city, following the Friday night vote that saw the state become the sixth one to legalize gay marriage.
Yes, in a landmark ruling and display New York become only the sixth state in the USA where gay couples can legally wed, however, just this one state doubles the number of Americans residing in a state equality, at least as far as marriage goes.
The New York Senate have been discussing and debating the issue for a number of hours over the last couple of days and finally on Friday night came the vote that saw them approve the same-sex marriage bill by 33-29 at the New York state Senate building in the sate capitol in Albany.
Supporters of equality and same sex marriage reacted with cheers, jubilations, celebrations. For the gay community this is seen as such an important and pivotal moment in the fight for equality in America.
“I’m thrilled about the news from NY Marriage equality! Every day we get a little closer. What an amazing feeling” Ellen DeGeneres said on her twitter account. Neil Patrick Harris was equally happy, saying “It PASSED! Marriage Equality in NY!! Yes!! Progess!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A Historic night!”
“Could not be more thrilled that gay marriage finally passed in NY. Congrats!!” said The View and HLN presenter Joy Behar. True top pop star and one of the World’s most powerful women, Lady Gaga, who has never been shy in her support of the gay community, of equality said “The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice+equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it”
