Exclusive Interview: American Idol Alum Julissa Veloz Strikes Again with Billboard Club Hit "Predator"
Often associated with her American Idol finalist turn, Julissa Veloz continues to carve out her own path as a bonafide artist, dedicated to her craft of songwriting and performing. With her recent Billboard hit “Take Control” from Carrillo Music already under her belt, Julissa has a fiery new single titled “Predator.” Billboard Magazine is reporting this week that “Predator" has moved up to #25* on the Hot Club Play Chart. Recently, I met with Julissa while she was in Vegas opening up for Mya in a concert event for World AIDS Day. I thought this would be a perfect time to sit down with Julissa for a fresh and candid talk about her dazzling career so far.
Julissa has undergone a complete image transformation and is wearing her hair cropped in an angular cut with hints of purple for a new striking and edgy look. I started at her beginning and asked her about her roots as a singer.
“I began singing at the age of 5 and started lessons at the age of 10. At that time I was really young and I wasn’t sure what I wanted. I just knew wanted to get out of the house!”
Julissa’s family could not afford to send her to vocal training. So, Julissa was forced to seek out scholarship opportunities, which she did. Her early natural vocal ability won her the scholarship she needed. Due to a tragic turn of events when her home burned down, Julissa’s family moved to a more upscale neighborhood with a better school system in South Brunswick, NY. It was at South Brunswick High that she was able to partake in high school theatre and choir activities to further hone her craft.
“Growing up, my idols were Whitney, Aretha and Deborah Cox. I wanted to be like them and sing like them, a glowing Veloz states. “I currently love the band Muse, Audioslave and of course, Lady Gaga. You’ll only find epic tracks on my MP3 player!”
With stars in her eyes, Julissa reveals that her dream is to one day perform at The Glasconbury Festival in England. Acts like Snoop Dog, Shakira, JayZ and basically all of the biggest names in music perform there. She gets very excited as she talks about the artists she would like to perform with.
“I’d also love to open up for Lady Gaga or Muse,” gushes Veloz.
We asked Julissa what she might consider doing if she weren’t able to continue as singer and performer. Her response was a solid and quick answer, which revealed her undeniable artistic spirit.Continued on the next page
