Multiracial Cheerios Ad Causes Social Media Stir
The latest in a series of folksy Cheerios video advertisements has created a racial stir on social media, due to the use of a multiracial couple and their cute daughter.
The ad, which begins with a conversation between a white mother and her African-American daughter, was posted just one short week ago, and has already garnered over two million views. And so many unwelcome replies on the Cheerios YouTube channel that they've had to cut off the comments.
Many of the statements were decidedly racist in nature, stating some measure of disgust and even anger over the use of a mixed race couple, both on YouTube and on Cheerios' Facebook page. The negative comments on Facebook have been taken down, and since then, the commentary has been overwhelmingly in support. On YouTube, the more strict no-comment tact has been taken.
KSL reporter Andrew Wittenberg asked Tim Brown, a partner for advertising agency Richter7, if there were any issues with General Mills' bringing out a multiracial couple for their latest ad spot. "Nearly 5 million people in the U.S. are in an interracial relationship," said Brown, "and it's all trending toward that growth, so it's not out of line at all."
Indeed, the ad has all of the usual Cheerio hallmark touches: a warm and cozy home bathed in the soft glow of an early morning Sun, a parent and a child talking about healthy hearts, and a humorous twist to wrap it up.
Nothing new here, with the exception of the color tones of some of the actors. The ad ends with, well, you should watch and see why this ad is liked so much...
Regardless of the negativity from a vast minority, with over two million views, Cheerios has definitely gotten its money's worth (and press time) with this choice of ad spot.
