Hitler Reacts to Downfall Parody Removals
In response to legal threats, YouTube is currently in the process of removing all the popular "Hitler responds…"/"Hitler reacts…" parody videos from their site. The meme, employing a clip from Constantin Films' 2004 film Downfall, cleverly substituted user-generated subtitles to show Hitler, portrayed by Bruno Ganz, responding angrily to various news items and pop culture references.
Prompted by the DMCA takedown notice, Brad Templeton, an Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) board member, created this inevitable parody video explaining some of the copyright and fair use issues involved in the case while utilizing the format of the disputed meme. It's a funny and clever act of digital copyright activism that's been making the rounds pretty heavily over the last two days.
