AT&T Offers Unlimited Data Plan to Long-term Customers
The Verizon iPhone will be available in stores in a matter of weeks, ending several years of AT&T iPhone exclusivity. In June, AT&T dropped the unlimited data plan, and began offering tethering and two limited data plans. Verizon customers have the option of selecting a $30 unlimited data plan with the purchase of a new iPhone, a plan once available to AT&T iPhone users.
AT&T is currently offering customers who owned iPhones prior to June 2010 the ability to switch back to an unlimited data plan according to unofficial reports. AT&T’s move appears to be a scramble to prevent existing customers from jumping ship to Verizon. AT&T has not made the unlimited data plan public and will likely offer the service to customers attempting to cancel their service.
According to a recent ChangeWave survey, 15 percent of the surveyed AT&T customers, were interested in switching to the Verizon iPhone. Bloomberg speculates AT&T could lose up to 1 million iPhone customers to Verizon. The gloves are on and neither company will pull punches in the battle for iPhone customers.
