OK Go Melds Minds with Their Say The Same Thing App
Pop rock band OK Go are not ones to shy away from creative innovation, even if it is incidental. Known more for their quirky and off the wall videos, the band has never shied away from an opportunity to bring their ideas to the world. It is with that collaborative and communal feeling that they (through Paracadute, their creative ideas company) have released Say the Same Thing, a word-play app that creates connections across the globe.
The concept is simple. You play with a friend (or random stranger), each person entering a random word. Then each person guesses a word that their friend might use to connect the first two words. This step repeats until the players say the same thing. Each game is unpredictable, completely unique and full of in-jokes one might have with friends. The app is both simple and complex at the same time, due to the random nature and connectivity with friends. This thing may meld minds.
While the app itself has no band related content (you won't find promotional material within the app) guitarist Andy Ross is the creative mind behind the app, in invention and coding. (Though development is credited to OK Go and SpaceInch) "The game is similar to an old improv game that I used to play in person with friends from high school and college," says Ross, "We started playing it as a band because it's the kind of thing people in vans and buses do, and it's great to play with people you know really well."
Check out the promotional video starring band members Tim Nordwind and Damian Kulash, in which they play the game in various locations, all the while growing closer and more connected as human beings and friends.
While there is no band content, the band was quick to make sure they could take advantage of an inevitably popular app to connect with their fans. "It does offer us a cool experiment in connecting directly with fans, too, since we've built in the option to play with a band member," adds lead singer Kulash. "It gives us something fun to do with them, something more substantial than tweeting hello at them or putting emoticons in their Instagram comments."
All this while Words With Friends parent Zynga is slowly slipping into the quicksand of obscurity.
Say the Same Thing is currently available for the iPhone and Android.
