Could Facebook Become an Online University? - Page 2
Assessment or Testing: Here is an area that would need some work. While I was able to find some quiz modules, they were very weak and did not provide the robust features of a LMS. However, after a few emails to the developers that created the apps, I found all were willing to expand on their work to provide more comprehensiveness.
Certificate: Another area that would need some work. I did find one or two apps to meet this need. After contacting the developers, both were able to provide the necessary code to customize the apps to meet my needs.
Gradebook: Nothing here was available on FB. Clearly, there would need to be some development and integration here.
Assignment Upload: This became a bit more problematic. I was unable to find something that would work for this. Perhaps something along the lines of collaboration package, but it would really need some thought to make it work.
Beyond these, I was able to find a number of additional features that were available for social networking, but would fit nicely into an LMS environment on Facebook.
One question that might come to mind is “Why?” Why would anyone consider using Facebook as a learning platform? Here is where I believe FB could really stand out. I want to address each individually.
First, Facebook is built on a solid system. Consider the size and depth of all the information FB manages, the users that utilize them, and the depth of “moving parts” that go on in the social network. The system and infrastructure would be able to manage any university or college without even a hiccup.
Second, while some of the features I mentioned are not available (or needed some further development), there is a strong community of developers who would could do much of what we are discussing. Similar to the Open Source community, the variety of FB app developers could certainly meet this need.
Third, and this is big, there is a very limited learning curve to utilizing Facebook. Based on the data, many people already use it, so it is an extension of what they are already doing. In addition, with so many people having FB accounts, enrollment would be easy and somewhat seamless. A university or college that were to capitalize on such a platform, would be able to reach a truly international audience.Continued on the next page
