Edwarde Tufte discusses sparklines (”intense, simple, word-size graphics”) in his excellent book Beautiful Evidence and advocates their use in as many places as possible. I agree with this completely - many publications, especially those of a financial nature, could benefit from the inclusion of sparklines.
