I haven't been moved at all to do an Oscar Update because nothing has happened that warrants any kind of real attention. Either predictions are being made on films that haven't been seen or much ado is being made about nothing.

Having conquered playing a black man inTropic of Thunder, Robert Downey, Jr. is now starring in The Soloist as Los Angeles Times journalist Steve Lopez who wrote a successful column about a homeless violinist named Nathaniel Anthony Ayer in 2005.

The film follows the life of a run down journalist who has sort of lost his way with words played by Robert downey Jr.

Joe Wright’s The Soloist will be making its North American premiere as the opening night film of the 2008 AFI Fest in Los Angeles. In the film, Jamie Foxx plays Nathaniel Ayers, the true-life musical prodigy who succumbed to schizophrenia and ended up homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. Robert Downey, Jr.

Why is it that in Hollywood prestige pictures, “genius” is so often preceded by “crazy”? Is it a way to reassure mediocre but levelheaded viewers that brilliance can only come at the expense of one’s sanity? Whatever it is, the trailer for The Soloist doesn’t give me much hope.
