http://lifehacker.com/ 391435/ learn-to-play-an-instrument-online

    Quick, Block Del.icio.us

I’m not a fan of internet filtering systems. At all! Simply banning web sites doesn’t teach students anything about safely using the net and it excuses some educators from having to manage web access. However, I do understand that filters are a political reality and that there is some material on the internet that needs to be blocked from student view.

    Adaptation versus adaptability

    http://nlpers.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ adaptation-versus-adaptability.html

Domain adaptation is, roughly, the following problem: given labeled data drawn from one or more source domains, and either (a) a little labeled data drawn from a target domain or (b) a lot of unlabeled data drawn from a target domain; do the following. Produce a classifier (say) that has low expected loss on new data drawn from the target domain.

    missional ignorance

In Reaching Out Henri Nouwen talks about the importance of weakness and poverty as we go out (Luke 10:4). He writes on poverty of mind (slightly adapted here), “Someone who is filled with ideas, concepts, opinions and convictions cannot show hospitality. There is no inner space to listen, no openness to discover the gift of the other.

Cast 498 and the Moment Before

    http://troutwaders.com/ blog/ ?p=210

I say moment. It could be a period of time as well. For me, it was about a fly cast 498. I was just about to shatter the glassy surface of the water by throwing my fly rod into it. Everything within a 25 foot radius of me had felt the built up frustration within me. Intermixed [...]

Student Creativity and Writing (on) the Web

    http://www.tamaleaver.net/ 2008/ 05/ 18/ student-creativity-and-writing-on-the-w…

One of the things I’ve been thinking about a lot this semester has been the way my teaching does - or doesn’t - encourage my students to develop that elusive, highly ambiguous but universally sought-after quality of creativity.

    Blackboard comes to Facebook

This doesn’t make me like Blackboard anymore, but it’s worth mentioning that you can now access Blackboard via Facebook with a new app. Let’s face it. You would live on Facebook if you could. Imagine a world where you could manage your entire life from Facebook – it’s not that far off! Right now, though, one thing missing is your academic life.

    Getting Overinvolved in School

    http://www.assortedstuff.com/ ?p=2542

In this morning’s Post, a teacher from our overly-large school district has some things to say about parental involvement. His focus is not only the lack of participation, however, but on those who are “overinvolved” in their children’s education. Let me be clear: The vast majority of parents with whom we deal are wonderful and supportive.

How are our online conversations part of our own learning? I’ve been loosely participating in the 31 Day Comment Challenge, (which is an effort to focus on improving blog comments through various activities.)   It’s been a little bit of a learning curve for me to figure out how to use coComment,
