With their playoff hopes continuing to get stronger, thanks to a game 7 win against the Hawks and a game one triumph over Lebron’s Cavs, the Celtics are primed to play for the next few weeks. That success may hamper assistant coach Tom Thibodeau’s chances at getting an interview with the Knicks, according to the Daily News.

ESPN is reporting that a deal with Mike D’Antoni is close, but the coach and his agent are awaiting an offer from Donnie Walsh and the Knicks. “Although D’Antoni and agent Warren LeGarie continue to hold talks with the New York Knicks — with the Knicks said to be genuinely interested and contemplating whether to make an offer — it has been known for days that Chicago is the job D’Antoni wants.

Avery Johnson deserves a look. I personally would be absolutely fine with the Knicks hiring Mark Jackson but Johnson is to young and to good of a head coach to ignore. Johnson was “relieving him of his duties” with the Dallas Mavericks Wednesday. This season Johnson found himself a victim of circumstance.

Marc Berman is reporting in the Post that Suns coach could enter the Knicks coaching equation should the Suns get bounced in round 1. Mitch Lawrence notes that Walsh indeed has interest in Tom Thibodeau who has his hands full trying to stop the suddenly explosive Atlanta Hawks, who evened their series with the Celtics at 2-2 with a 97-92 victory last night behind 35 points from Joe Johnson.

According to Howard Beck of the New York Times the New York Knicks are in no rush to hire their next head coach. They are reported as eyeing a few assistant coaches around the league that are still on active playoff teams. It is also reported that if some head coaches get fired after first round exits in the playoffs the Knicks would show great interest in them.

Two days ago I observed that the often cautious Danny Ainge spoke without qualification in calling out the 2008 Celtics as the best defensive team of its era. Bold words, no doubt. I agreed that the defense has been stifling, but said I'd need to see some more proof before paying homage (a championship wouldn't hurt either).
