If Hurricane Gustav had maintained or increased its strength before hitting Louisiana, it could have been a repeat of three years ago. But it wasn't, because Gustav decreased to a Category 2 system before landfall.

Hurricane Gustav has brushed by the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), where 1.2 million barrels of oil per day is offloaded from supertankers. Here is the recent trajectory of Gustav superimposed on a map of the LOOP area, including Port Fourchon, also of critical importance to the production of oil from the Gulf of Mexico.

As it heads toward New Orleans, Hurricane Gustav has lost a bit of strength (winds from 150mph to 110mph) -- still strong enough to do major damage. The National Hurricane Center reports: "At 800 am [central time]... the center of Hurricane Gustav was located.. about 80 miles...

Gustav is about 65 miles from Port Fourchon, La., 115 south-southeast of New Orleans, and 195 miles southeast of Lafayette, Louisiana. Winds are 115 mph - barely a cat 3 - and no further intensification is expected!
