    Great friends, great music

    http://soleworld.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 05/ 15/ great-friends-great-music/

This week has been a break from my usual routine and discipline. A great friend is here from Stockholm and so instead of working with rehearsing, writing, recording or marketing I we have been spending time “listening to great music and talking about life” as Anna put it. “That is what our friendship is about,” she says.

Vocal Percussion, or, why I still love hopesfall's "the satellite years"

    http://iggli.com/ roller/ emceesher/ entry/ vocal_percussion_or_why_i

I keep meaning to write my "personal musical history" but keep getting sidetracked going through my old music. I guess at some point i'll write a comprehensive, chronological account of the evolution of my taste, but for now, expect a shitload of record reviews that should have happened in or around the year 2000.

    The origins of music

    http://todaysmusicsite.com/ blog/ archives/ 107

When did our ancestors first engage in creating music? The answer is not known. But music has been around a long time: musical instruments are among the oldest human-made artifacts discovered, far older than our forays into agriculture. The oldest known instrument is a Slovenian bone flute from around fifty thousand years ago.

    Ben Folds, Undeclared, and ICCA

    http://www.jakebouma.com/ 2008/ 02/ 20/ ben-folds-undeclared-and-icca/

It's no secret that I have many unnecessary and un-useful skills. It once prompted my friend Brandon to call me the "king of party tricks". One of these skills is vocal percussion. I've spent a lot of time (too much?) since my freshman year of high school perfecting the art of mimicking a drum set with my mouth.

An explanation for the emergence of Jazz (1956)

    http://theoryofmusic.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 01/ 16/ an-explanation-for-the-emergen…

The following explanation of the emergence of jazz is a summary of ideas found in Bruno Nettl’s introduction to ethnomusicology, Music in Primitive Culture, first published in 1956. I have mostly kept the terminology of the original. My additions are in square brackets and I have added my own conclusion.
