It was democracy in action again yesterday in Berlin, and it all went terribly wrong. Well, in my view it did. We all know that a government is only as good as the people who elect it (or vote it out of office), but if anybody ever had any doubts about referendums, well, here we have it.

Tempelhof, the Berlin airport at the epicenter of the Berlin Airlift back in 1948-49 will close in October. Even iconic airports sometimes have to close to make room for change. The Berlin Airlift became a symbol of American determination to keep West Berlin free and out from under the dictatorial thumb of the Soviet Union.

It looks like its curtains after all for Berlin’s historic Tempelhof International Airport. According to news reports, airport supporters failed to get enough people to vote this past weekend to keep the airport open. There wasn’t even enough turn-out to have the vote be considered valid.
