Copper stocks got hammered Monday, as copper prices continued to slide, falling below $3. Among the many losers are Equinox Minerals Inc. [TSE: EQX], down 23%; Teck Cominco Ltd. (TCK), down 13.8%; First Quantum Minerals Ltd. [TSE:FM], down 19.6% and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN), down 17.5%.

Following last year's Galore Creek nightmare, Teck Cominco Ltd. (TCK) has another massive cost over-run on its hands with the Fort Hills oil sands project. The capital cost for Phase One of the project is now pegged at an incomprehensible C$23.8-billion, an increase of 50-60% from last year's forecast.

The mood at the Denver Gold Forum was reminiscent of the week following September 11, 2001. Both mining equities and metal prices continued their decline with much talk but little action by bullish investors.

One of the uglier mining disputes in recent memory is apparently over as junior company Petaquilla Copper Ltd. (PTQLF.PK) agreed to get taken over by Inmet Mining Corp.
