Large Hadron Collider switch-on fears Are completely unfounded

http://blog.makezine.com/ archive/ 2008/ 09/ large_hadron_collider_swi.html?CMP=…
We had a commenter that was really upset about the Large Hadron Collider (or as I like to call it, the biggest refrigerator ever made). I also received a few emails, with the same concerns. Here's what the commenter said and below that, the latest from Science Daily... ...

Invisibility and Anti-Invisiblity Cloaks: Secret Titties and Dinosaurs?

    http://ifightrobots.com/ ?p=90

Invisibility and Anti-Invisiblity Cloaks: Secret Titties and Dinosaurs? September 5th, 2008 — science Scientists have recently made some serious breakthroughs in the pursuit of a true invisibility cloak, with metamaterials that actually bend light waves around them, rather than just filming the surrounding terrain and projecting it onto the material, like previous ‘invisibility cloaks.’.

    The Egg And The Bottle

    http://www.coveted.net/ 2008/ 09/ 05/ the-egg-and-the-bottle/

This is a classic experiment that we tried in science class when I was a child. Eric and I tried it at home, we used both the balloons and the hardboiled eggs just because we could. It’s kind of hard to find an old glass milk bottle, but our local grocer sells organic milk as well as chocolate milk in these old types of bottles so it wasn’t too difficult for us to find.

    Science Gone Astray

    http://www.mytinykingdom.com/ 2008/ 09/ 04/ science-gone-astray/

I’m all about encouraging the boys’ love of science.  Sadly, they’re not satisfied with the science they learn at school, because television has taught them that real scientists use test tubes and Bunsen burners, both of which are tops on Porter’s Christmas list.  A Bunsen burner = fire and last time

    Favorite Halloween Science Demos

I remember a time when Halloween was nothing more than dressing up and running from house to house in search of the greatest candy bars. Fast-forward to 2008 and Halloween is a big deal… elaborate costumes, parties galore and merchandising second only to Christmas.

Mentos + Diet Coke + Zero G = Best. Experiment. Ever.

    http://blog.wired.com/ geekdad/ 2008/ 09/ mentos-diet-cok.html

Robert Woodhead, self-described Mad Overlord and all-around geek, has posted an amazing amount of detail from his recent experiment in seeing how the Diet Coke & Mentos reaction works in microgravity. It's a modification of the now-standard geyser-producing demonstration, but with a twist: performing the trick on a Zero G flight and recording it on a high-speed camera.

Some People Think The Supercollider May End The World

    http://oddculture.com/ 2008/ 09/ 02/ some-people-think-the-supercollider-may-end…

Will The World End On September 10th? Here’s a story from the SUN: Scientists are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world. Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.

Why We Can’t Hit Flies With A Swatter

Posted by supercynic on August 30, 2008 Read this article and let me know if you had the same concluding thought as I did. I simply cut and pasted this straight from CNN’s website because I didn’t want to leave out any of the crucial details. Quick-witted flies can ‘detect swatter threat’ (CNN) — Flies always appear to be a step ahead of the swatter.
