    The lighter side

    http://thebeernut.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 11/ lighter-side.html

In yesterday's post on CAMRA NI's festival in Belfast, I mentioned the collective decision by my cohort that a particular beer smelled of urine. It did -- Bateman's Valiant exuded a powerful odour of railway station toilets, as Adeptus has also already said.

Water Monster, Axoloti, of Mexico City Nears Extinction

    http://www.greenpacks.org/ 2008/ 11/ 05/ water-monster-axoloti-of-mexico-city-ne…

Mexico City’s water monster, an Axoloti salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum), is about one foot long (30cm). According to scientists at the Chapultepec Zoo, the monster is about to go extinct because its lake habitat is draining, the water quality is deteriorating and non-native fish species started eating its eggs and larva, and competing for its food.

    Miradi and Conservation

    http://benetech.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 10/ miradi-and-conservation.html

I was just able to attend an exciting conference in Vancouver, ConEx, the Conservation Learning Exchange. It was organized by The Nature Conservancy, but had folks from many of the other leading groups. For me, it was a chance to meet practitioners using our Miradi conservation project management software.

To eliminate some confusion: The Coastal Giant Salamander isn't really giant.

    http://rockpaperlizard.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 10/ coastal-giant-salamander-it-isnt-…

Here is a terrestrial form of the Coastal Giant Salamander, Dicamptodon tenebrosus, an animal that can achieve a snout-vent length (nose-to-naughty bits) of 190 mm, which is about 7.5 inches. Giant? Hardly. But compared to the usual, dainty plethodontid species one finds beneath logs, it is relatively enormous.

Our buddies in the Autum Film stayed with us a for a few days last week, and A and I took them out to Multnomah Falls. On the way out, at Latourelle Falls we saw a salamander, which was completely unexpected and yes, rad. That's right. Rad.
