This week, Sagem the mobile firm which not everyone knows alot about, announced that they have managed to embed a whole GPS receiver into a traditional sim card. This is extrememly exciting news, because the result of this technology would mean it could be possible in the future to bring GPS functionality into any phone.

Getting a bit technical for a moment, I got a bit of news through from Sagem Orga, the chaps who make a lot of sim card and sim card related systems. They’ve partnered with BlueSky Positioning to bring the world’s first Assisted-GPS Sim card to market. Interesting.

Smartcard vendor, Sagem Orga has announced a partnership with BlueSky Positioning to integrate A-GPS positioning technology on to conventional SIM cards. Sagem Orga and BlueSky Positioning’s new approach ­incorporates a GPS receiver and a proprietary antenna into the SIM card, enabling mobile operators to deploy applications with no need for software or hardware changes.
