Mornington Crescent We all have voices in our heads. I don't mean just our own, though that's a voice, too. I mean that some people by dint of tone, use of language and principles they live by have a recurring influence on how we think. In the mind's eye they can be conjured up to talk to us, even when they are no longer around.

It is with great sadness that I heard the news of the passing of Humphrey Lyttleton. Although Jazz has never really been my kind of music, ( all the right notes, but played in the wrong order ), I came to love him as the compere of BBC Radio 4’s “I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue”.

At the ripe old age of 86 Humph has left the building.. The master of trumpets, wit and innuendo will no longer be hosting I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, leaving us ISIHAC addicts to ponder what will happen next ?

Humph died last night. He shall be missed. His BBC Biography reads: Humphrey Lyttelton, a self-taught trumpet player, is one of the father figures of British jazz. He is the chairman of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and presents The Best of British Jazz on Radio 2.
