Abbas Kiarostami is the winner of the 65th Venice Film Festival’s Glory to the Filmmaker Award, which honors eclectic masters of world cinema. The prize had begun last year with the Japanese director Takeshi Kitano named the first recipient of the award.

Variety reports that Iranian director, Abbas Kiarostami, won the Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the Venice Film Fest. Pete Howell gives Kathryn Bigelow’s Hurt Locker a rave review, writing: Just when you think the battle of Iraq war dramas has been fought and lost, along comes one that demands to be seen – if you can handle the raging adrenaline.

So the Venice Film Festival kicks off tonight with its glossiest title, the out-of-competition “Burn After Reading.” Reviews ought to start trickling in tonight, though it’s worth bearing in mind that festival fever can often give the premature illusion of critical consensus.

Having watched quite a few Kiarostami films, I ended up going for  Correspondences. It’s one of those exhibitions wherein audio-visual elements take center stage as museum installations; an experience that sometimes turns out to be grating and very very confusing (case in point being ‘replay christian marclay‘ a couple of months back).
