As several game news sites are reporting, having connected the dots, virtual worlds are starting a new level of integration with Washington — with the naming of Susan Crawford and Kevin Werbach to lead Obama’s FCC transition team, there are now two knowledgeable denizens of the virtual world helping set some policy.

Last week, President-elect Obama appointed Kevin Werbach, assistant professor of legal studies and business ethics at Wharton, and Susan Crawford, who teaches communications and Internet law at the University of Michigan, to co-chair his FCC transition team.

If you don’t know why this is good news, imagine paying for the internet as if it were cable. Sounds ridiculous right? Paying for specific websites within the internet? Well, that’s been pushed by folks inside and outside of the FCC and now it seems like those who want to keep the internet free and open are set to take over.

Any lingering doubts as to where the incoming Obama administration will be coming from on telecom policy were more or less erased Friday when the president elect named Susan Crawford and Kevin Werbach to lead the transition team at the Federal Communications Commission.

I don't know exactly what that means, but it can only be good news for those of us who care about keeping the Internet open and vital.
