Participating in Alec Saunders’ Squawk Box this morning
http://abrilliantblog.com/ 2008/ 05/ participating-in-alec-saunders-squawk-box-t…I was very excited this morning to get to participate in Alec Saunders podcast called Squawk Box. It’s a conference call led by Alec and mostly about the daily tech news. I was amongst some of the heavy hitters this morning and felt like a small fish in a big sea.

Facebook annoints XMPP, open IM endgame in sight.
http://saunderslog.com/ 2008/ 05/ 14/ facebook-annoints-xmpp-open-im-endgame-in-…Those cagey guys at Facebook are about to do something which nobody else in the last five years has been able to do. They’re about to crown Jabber/XMPP the king of IM protocols, and in the process they may finally crack the hegemony that AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo have enjoyed in the IM market for the last decade.

Barcamp Radio this Friday
http://saunderslog.com/ 2008/ 04/ 16/ barcamp-radio-this-friday/I’m working on a new concept for the SquawkBox on Friday, modeled on BarCamp. The idea is pretty simple — we’ll hold a couple of BarCamp sessions (dubbed BarCamp Radio) in place of the regular SquawkBox. Like BarCamp, the only real rule is that there are no rules. Attendees need to lead a session, suggest a session, or participate. That’s all.

What apps are really successful on Facebook?
http://www.lucafiligheddu.com/ 2008/ 04/ what-apps-are-really-successful-on-face…I found this article by Ravi Shankar at LatestGeekNews very interesting and thoughtful. He made some interesting points about the actual usage of Voice and messaging apps on Facebook. As we realized some months ago already, Facebook is not really a platform for voice widgets.

Call for FREE Worldwide: is the solution is behind the corner?
http://www.lucafiligheddu.com/ 2008/ 03/ call-for-free-worldwide-is-the-solution…It’s clear for everyone that people are always looking for a way to call for free all over the world or to get the cheapest rates ever, almost free. Many players are fighting in this ground, with clearly a weak and not long term business model as well as no real monetization strategy.

The Evolution of LOGOs
http://sensorymetrics.com/ 2008/ 03/ 02/ the-evolution-of-logos/A few weeks ago Neatorama published a great review of the evolution of company logos. It’s hard to believe that Google is 10 years old! It’s logo has evolved, and is probably better than it would have been had they kept the original “Back-Rub”. On the Ottawa startup scene we have iotum.

Iotum - Facebook’s Global Free Conferencing App
http://www.henshall.com/ stuart/ 2008/ 02/ 27/ iotum-facebooks-global-free-confe…Alec Saunders has been writing in the VoIP space now for as long as I can remember. He’s also seen his company Iotum go through a number of iterations. So its interesting today to see how a group of small VoIP companies Truphone, Abbeynet can collaborate to provide a product that none of them could individually provide.
