Have you all noticed that everyone has an avatar now? There is no longer the generic “Mystery Man” for bloggers and those who comment who haven’t uploaded an avatar. (If you didn’t already know, an avatar is a small thumbnail photo or graphic that you can attach to your name—I suppose for purposes

I’ve just heard this new term “identicon” it tickles me to know about it. Let me search it first and I’ll post about what I know later.

WordPress has improved something. If someone without an Avatar (mostly people who aren’t logged in) leave a comment, they have an avatar! To toggle the images go to your WP Dashboard, then click on Settings. Click on Discussion and scroll down. You’ll see Avatar Display, here you can toggle Avatars on & off.

Identicons as Default Avatars 06May08 Don’t freak out when you see some weird graphic beside your name and comment. WordPress recently added a new feature which provides avatars for users who don’t have one. I have chosen to enable this feature, here, on my insignificant, seldom-read weblog.

Kaleidoscope-y Gravatars! Dunno why but all the blank (Gr)avatars on my Blog have suddenly turned Kaleidoscopic! [Laymanspeak] Avatars or Gravatars are the small images that appear beside the commenter’s name [/Laymanspeak]. WP users will have their own avatar and others will have a gravatar based on their email id.

If I were to comment on my own blog, but I did not log on, or otherwise have an avatar, there would be no visual to identify me. In the past, WordPress would show a silhouette of a generic person. A new site feature is the creation of an image, called an identicon, that is unique because it is based on the IP address of the poster.

On WordPress.com right now, and in the next release of self hosted WordPress - version 2.6 -  you have a few extra settings that relate to avatars: What’s cool is that for people who haven’t yet added an avatar, like my friend Rama, instead of the “mystery man” icon, I am now showing an Identicon.
