Hormel Foods (HRL), maker of Spam and other packaged meat products, just reported its third quarter results. Despite the company raising prices, profits still fell 9 percent. Higher meat, fuel, and other costs put a dent into margins, but revenues rose 10 percent to $1.68 billion. (more…)

Being a shareholder of a major company can come with perks. I once got a free pen for attending Smithfield Foods' annual meeting. I got a coupon (which I used for a veggie burger) at another shareholder meeting. OK, so those types of perks aren't anything to write home about.

Summer is primo BLT fixin’ time at our house. There’s nothing better than a BLT made with homegrown tomatoes. Savvy Dad made BLTs this past weekend and got the fancy Hormel bacon out. You know, the center cut “good stuff.” Savvy Dad noticed that when he took the bacon out of the package, Hormel must have misunderstood center cut and chosen the fatty cut.

Austin, Texas is known for its music and its IBM plant. Another well-known attraction is the annual Spamarama festival spotlighting Austin, Minn.'s favorite Hormel-created meat product. I've written about this in the past. Hormel Foods is not involved with the event, though the quasi-related Spam Mobile has made appearances.

In a recent news release, Hormel and the Culinary Institute of America announced they were partnering up to offer advanced classes to professional chefs. The curriculum was chosen by both institutions in order to provide an education opportunity that had been in the field for more than five years.
