You almost expect to hear a faint trace of static dusting Run On Sentence’s songs. The band’s music—a mixture of swing, blues and folk often embellished with Spanish trumpets, subtly Latin rhythms, even yodeling—sounds like something coming out of a phonograph horn a century ago.

CHICAGO – As a testament to its set design, it wasn’t immediately clear if certain structures were naturally part of the Strawdog Theatre space or if they were fabricated specifically for the “Old Town” production. It turned out to be the latter as this story of Chicago’s political machine unfolded with song, dance, wit, a relatively large cast and a 10-piece live band.

There are times when city employees deserve recognition for their public service. I am pleased to learn that Karen Hamman, our (Mission Viejo) city clerk, has just been awarded "2008 city clerk of the year" by the City Clerk's Association of CA at their annual award banquet that was held last Thursday where Karen was given a crystal trophy.

The Altoona Curve began a 4-game series against the Erie SeaWolves in Erie with a win on Thursday. Unfortunately, they lost the remaining 3 games of the series. RHP Brian Rogers was promoted from Altoona to Indianapolis today (Sunday), and Derek Antelo was placed on the Disabled List.

Pipes (it’s been around for over a year and I’ve blogged about it before) but if you’ve not played with it yet, now is the time to have a go. Pipes is essentially a mashup tool, particularly useful for doing things with RSS feeds.

Friday: Erie SeaWolves 13, Altoona Curve 4 boxscore The Curve pounded out 13 hits, but could only get 4 of their base runners across the plate in this loss. CF James Boone and 2B Melvin Dorta led the hitting attack. Boone hit a solo homer in the 3rd inning, which made the traditional exit from the ball park over the right field wall.

The Altoona Curve are currently in 5th place in the Eastern League Southern Division, with a 4-7 record, 3 games out of first place. They are in the middle of the first road trip of the season. They won one out of three games in Reading, and have won the first of three games in Trenton.

Greensboro Grasshoppers 6, Hickory Crawdads 1 boxscore The Grasshoppers pitchers held the Crawdads to 3 hits as Hickory suffered only the second loss of the season. The Crawdads went down in order in the first three innings. They did get three baserunners in the 4th inning, when 1B Miles Durham doubled and LF Erik Huber reached base on a fielding error.
