    In Black and White

    http://artblogbybob.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 09/ in-black-and-white.html

When Vincent Van Gogh looked for sources of inspiration, he turned East and joined in the Japonisme craze that captured the imagination of many European artists in the late nineteenth century. In 1921, Japanese artist Shiko Munakata reversed the line of influence when he saw Van Gogh’s art and tried to incorporate it into his woodcuts.

    http://amhpub.amherst.edu/ avalera10/ blog/ 2008/ 09/ 03/ what-to-do-and-where-t…

Welcome Back Everyone!  I haven’t yet gotten a sense of how many people are reading Amhpub but I hop that the freshman class has ushered in a new slew of readers! In the past I’ve written reviews of shows and museums as a way of encouraging people to check them out and to generally generate interest in art going on right around us.

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” — Albert Einstein # Let’s not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it. ~Vincent Van Gogh # Frustration does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows but only empties today of its strength.

Lunch Lady Action Figure. Image source: Stupid.com Just in time for the return to school we have the Lunch Lady Action Figure. As a public high school graduate I well remember the stern demeanor and terrifying glare of the lunch room ladies.

    Industrial Revolution

    http://artblogbybob.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 09/ industrial-revolution.html

Impressionism, thanks to the seemingly endless string of blockbuster exhibitions circling the globe, often seems a tired, exhausted vein of art gold. Too-often relegated to the soft-focus, pretty pictures of calendars and gift shop items that rake in profits for museums, Impressionism and the Impressionists too often seem toothless.

Wheels on the Bus Go ‘Round and ‘Round

When I was in my teens and early twenties, I taught swim lessons. My students ranged from 6 months old to 60 years old. It was something I truly enjoyed, and based on what other people said, I was pretty good. There was one thing about swim lessons that I absolutely abhorred.

    Celestrial Impressions

    http://wildthreadstudio.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 09/ celestrial-impressions.html

In last week's art class I replicated one of Van Gogh's self portraits in an exercise designed to help us expand our use of values. The piece above reminds of me of Starry, Starry Night and I wonder if I was inconsciously influenced by Mr. Van Gogh. It was created from hand painted cloth, foiling, painted Lutradur, and pigments.
