A stellar cast including Penelope Cruz, Ben Kingsley, Dennis Hopper, Patricia Clarkson, Peter Sarsgaard and Deborah Harry are starring in Lakeshore Entertainment’s Elegy, hitting theaters August 8, 2008, after a run in film festivals around the country. Cruz plays a Cuban student whose professor (Kingsley) attempts to seduce her.

Patrick Swayze's dreams of being a dad may not be realized, however, he's being optimistic about his cancer diagnosis. The Dirty Dancing actor's rep has issued the following statement: "Actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.

What is completely revelatory in this film is the public backlash that appeared both before and after the film was released. I'm shocked by the support HMOs get from so much of the American public. The most impressive part of this film for me was the British doctor who earns less that $200,000 each year who lives comfortably in one of the world's most expensive cities.

Ang Lee directs us to an imaginary China of the not too distant past where martial arts experts are able to fly. And really, it is such a thrill to watch that I dreamt about flying after watching this film. This is sort of an Adult version of Peter Pan that is set in a slightly more realistic land.

I don't really want to like this movie. Some aspects of the story just don't seem believable. But I guess that's not the point of the film. I've always liked survival stories: Robinson Crusoe, Alive, Cast Away, etc.

I don't know if I am hardened or what, but this film, though quite tense and graphic, was remarkable gentle. I think it had something to do with the dutiful characters in the film; since they were able to press on into sure death, so was I able to follow with my eyes. I was both eager to watch Letters and dreading the viewing.
