I’ve written extensively in this space on the danger posed to workers in some industries by combustible dust, and how the emergence of that risk revealed the degree to which the Bush Administration has gutted OSHA — the agency that’s supposed to be making sure that your workplace is safe and healthy.

Last week’s announcement that OSHA was seeking an enormous fine from Imperial Sugar for their actions leading to the explosion that killed 13 workers was encouraging, insofar as it means that the company’s negligence will carry a price tag.

Ever since the Imperial Sugar plant in Port Wentworth, Georgia, was destroyed in a massive blast caused by “combustible dust” — an explosion that killed 13 workers and led to nationwide inquiries about the risks posed by this threat — we’ve been waiting to see what penalties the Federal government would levy on the company for its carelessness.
