The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model is a concept car with a difference; instead of a skin of steel, it’s covered in a sheath of cloth. And if my thinking is right, I may have fabricated an idea that could help their car go the distance… As it stands, any car covered in cloth is unlikely to be given the green light by any road agency in either Europe or the US.

GINA stands for ‘Geometry and Functions In “N” Adaptions,’ with N adaptations referring to the flexible outer skin that is made out of cloth.

GINA is probably inspiring you a woman’s name but in BMW’s latest car prototype case it has a totally different meaning. G comes from Geometry, Shapes and Function, IN represents the infinite mathematical number n, while the A comes from Adaptation, so in one expression GINA means Geometry in an Infinite Number of Adaptations.

From a prototype defined as “visionary”, we can’t expect to be anything but surprised: and now BMW is presenting its studio-concept, the GINA Light Visionary Model, a softer car capable of changing its aspect according to the driver’s taste. The radical innovation is aimed at the formation of the bodywork.

It is called the “GINA Light Visionary”, this Bimmer Concept has a body made out of cloth. The metal body of the car has been replace with a special, flexible, highly durable and extremely expansion-resistant fabric material that stretches across a metal structure. With the word spreading like a virus about the GINA Light Visionary Model, it seems to mark BMWs successful entry in the niche of concept cars. It’s flawless, plastic-coated lycra fabric, can easily be stretched over a metal frame with stirring components, thereby offering shape-shifting properties to the sedan.
