The National Portrait Gallery exhibition Brilliant Women explores "the impact of the original 'Bluestocking Circle', a group of celebrated women writers, artists and thinkers who forged new links between gender, learning and virtue in eighteenth-century Britain".

One of the many benefits of being a sustainer of the Junior League of London is the opportunity to take part in fun cultural and social events. This morning i went to the nattional portrait gallery for a special breakfast and tour of this gem of an exhibition.

It's been an interesting time. It feels like ages and ages since I went to my Oxford Bluestockings weekly knit group and was presented with this incredibly beautiful blanket that the knitters had made, but in fact it was only just over a week and a half ago.

I was skimming through Charlotte Bronte’s Shirley today and find a chapter titled “The First Blue-Stocking” and thought I should share some of the history of this term, though there remains some debate as to the origins of the group as well as the term itself.
