A (very) small group of Wellingtonians met last night at mojo bond street, to discuss how and what to plan for a Gadgets user group. The overall theme was doing things. Be that just learning how to make your bluetooth go, through to learning every possible thing you can do with bluetooth, through to building your own gadgets.

I’ve been a big fan of joysticks since I first took hold of that shaft attached to a flat box which made up the main controller for the Atari 2600. This healthy respect for the joystick as a video game controller went up a notch in the late 80s when arcades started sprouting in my corner of the world.

I’ve been kabooming “Kaboom!” in my spare time for a couple weeks now and I’m almost ready to move on. Everyday, I come home and get just a little more done. Next up on the list is the song “Breakaway”. I play acoustic guitar on this one. It is one of the more mellow songs on the record.

What a surprise! I’ve just discovered that I suck at Space Invaders, a couple of days after learning that Frogger isn’t as easy to play now as it was back in the 80s. It’s a surprise because I play Chicken Invaders, an arcade-like PC game that parodies Space Invaders.

Oh, My, God. do you remember...?I just found out that my local has a Dig Dug arcade machine. Just the sight of it sent me back what, 25 years? You see, I must have played it for the first time when it came out, in 1982, so that means I was 7 (yes, I’m that old!).
