    Yesterday afternoon our local Rural Fire Department responded to a wildland fire. A whole bunch of fire departments just outside of L.A. responded to fires too. By dark, we had ours contained, while in southern California, homes were burning. We had a gentle breeze; they had Santa Anna winds with gusts up to 65 mph.

    Wildfires and heavy smoke are causing severe traffic problems in parts of Los Angeles. The 118 Freeway and 210 Freeway westbound were closed in both directions during the evening commute. The Los Angeles Times has reports and links to maps related to the traffic and fires.

Just one week from today last year, a series of wildfires sparked up all over southern California, eventually torching over 500,000 acres of land.

    Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency as multiple wildfires near Los Angeles threaten hundreds of homes and businesses. Strong Santa Ana winds are fanning the flames and causing the fires to spread rapidly across the landscape.

    Southern California is on fire again. People have been evacuated and at least 3 people have died so far as a direct result of the fire and/or smoke.Fire season is here again. I live at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains so smoke just seems to accumulate here. Many of the fires start in the mountains also.

    Marek Fire

    Monday-morning winds have kicked up the Marek Fire in Little Tujunga Canyon and Kagel Canyon; as of 3 p.m., the County of Los Angeles Fire Department reported the fire was at 5,300 acres and 5 percent containment. Before the winds increased, containment had been reported at 20 percent.

    Sesnon Fire

    The Sesnon Fire began late Monday morning near Porter Ranch; as of 3 p.m., the County of Los Angeles Fire Department reported it had already burned some 3,000 acres. There is no word on containment, and structures are threatened. Higher winds are expected for Monday night.
