Twhirl is a rockin’ desktop program for Twitter, the part micro-blog/part chat web service started by the guys who created Blogger. Twitter is taking the blogosphere by storm, but using it over the web is not without its hiccups.

I’m getting snowed under, even with following 92 twitterers, possibly because I live 12 hours in the future (GMT+8 vs GMT-5 for most Americans), and there’re pages of back tweets when I wake up every morning and check out my twitter account.

I thought I would write a quick little, non-techie, blog post about my experience with the desktop Twitter app known as Twhirl. I started using it on Mothers Day as an experiment. I was bored with twittering via IM and cell phone (just bored in general really) and thought I would give the Twhirl app a whirl.

Since being persuaded by Louis Gray to give FriendFeed another shot Monday, I’ve been testing desktop clients that run both Twitter and FriendFeed. The review doesn’t include every desktop app, only ones that run on a Mac (although I know of only one non-Mac desktop client).

My favorite Twitter app, Twhirl died on me two days ago. Actually, it’ snot Twhirl itself, the error message clearly identifies Adobe Air, stating the installation is damaged. Fixing it should be easy: just reinstall Air. Except… I can’t. Adobe installer says: This version of Adobe Air is already installed on your system.

I’ve been quite fond of the Adobe Air environment for some time now, since it manages to achieve a lot I have been missing from traditional applications. First and foremost, many Air aps bring together your desktop and the internet, which is great if you don’t want to launch your browser for a task, or you just want a simple, clean site-specific interface.

I currently run Ubuntu 8.04. I didn’t find a working twitter client that fits my needs. What we got gTwitter ugly user interface mitter only fetchs new tweets when I start it twitux lacks some usability One thing they all don’t do is giving me a option to directly answer a tweet.

InfoWorld ‘s lead story (by Neil McAlister) today is a cogent one which calls into question the continued existence of the Web browser. That may seem like the talk of a person who has not been taking his medication, but perhaps it is not. It is well worth the few minutes it will take you to read and think a little about it.
