Even those investors optimistic about Russia's transformation into an efficient, market-friendly economy know it will be years before Gazprom realizes its full potential in terms of free cash flow and valuation.

The public schools: decline vs. reform vs. change vs. improvement vs. transformation

    http://urbanplacesandspaces.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ public-schools-decline-vs-re…

Why haven't accreditation agencies gotten tougher with urban school systems? See, at the local level, including DC, schools were seen as sources of jobs and contracts and deals, not places of education. Outcomes didn't matter, deals and jobs mattered. This started with the first elected school board in the 1970s.

When Jen sent us pictures of her fantastic kitchen transformation (all the way from England!) we couldn’t wait to share ‘em. Here’s her letter: I absolutely love your blog and find your style so inspiring. I wanted to share my latest project with you as I am so pleased with it.

    Sea Change

    http://qarrtsiluni.com/ 2008/ 08/ 28/ sea-change/

One day the tide went out and kept on going. There were some among our people who were nervous. “A great ebbing brings a killing wave!” they cried. And yet minutes passed, then hours, and mud that had been a fathom deep began to dry, to crack under a strangely swollen sun.

    I Never Thought I Would Ever…

    http://midlifecrisisqueen.com/ 2008/ 08/ 28/ i-never-thought-i-would-ever/

Here’s an interesting exercise to try. I couldn’t go back to sleep so I started my own “I never in a million years thought I would ever” list. This is about all the crazy things that can happen at midlife, even though they seem virtually impossible.

News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch made a statement during the company’s annual meeting last year where he said:“We’re only at the beginning of two of the most profound social and economic trends of our age–globalization and digitalization,” rattling off a few of the company’s milestones of the past year.

Dogs Learn To Fly On Greatest American Dog

    http://realityrehash.com/ cbs/ dogs-learn-to-fly-on-greatest-american-dog

When was the last time you actually saw a dog flying on prime time television? Well tonight that very event happened as three of the five remaining pooches on Greatest American Dog took flight. Following Beth Joy’s elimination last week, the remaining five took some time to reflect on her time in the house.

    Neighborhood health care delivery

    http://ourownsystem.com/ 2008/ 08/ 27/ neighborhood-health-care-delivery/

Wal-Mart is opening its first Marketside store (yes, that Wal-Mart).  The concept is a 15,000 square foot (much, much smaller than the Super Wal-Mart) neighborhood market.  It’s meant to compete with Tesco’s Fresh & Easy entrance into the United States.

    When do you hide?

    http://carrieanddanielle.com/ when-do-you-hide/

You can run, and you *can* hide… Carrie says: When I’m not up for small talk. I duck around the corner at the grocery store if I see someone who I know but I am too tired to chat. Yes, I admit it. Danielle says: I hide when I’m angry.

    Are You Making Progress?

    http://artpettyonmanagement.typepad.com/ bestpractices/ 2008/ 08/ not-surprising…

Not surprisingly, it’s often difficult for senior executives and management teams to gain objective feedback on their individual and collective performance. I’ve worked with clients and in organizations where the management team was generally satisfied with their own performance and would give themselves high marks at a time when the employees would give them lower or even failing grades.
