From Converge…to Carmen?!
http://thefourohfive.com/ 2008/ 10/ 02/ from-convergeto-carmen/"If only we had guitars.." One of the endless joys of journalism is being sent out to see things you know very little about, at extremely short notice. Last night it was Bivet’s opera, Carmen, the review of which sneaks on to this page by virtue of you all being extremely culturally literate, and me being a newfound opera buff.

"Love Is a Mix Tape" by Rob Sheffield
http://everydayiwritethebook.typepad.com/ books/ 2008/ 09/ love-is-a-mix-tape-by…I was very excited to read Love Is A Mix Tape, by Rob Sheffield, the memoir of a young, music-obsessed husband who suddenly loses his wife in his early 30s to a pulmonary embolism. Each chapter is named after a mix tape that he or his wife made, and provides a backdrop, both thematic and chronological, for that part of the book.

Tevez is a legend, but he didn’t keep us up
http://ballhype.com/ story/ tevez_is_a_legend_but_he_didn_t_keep_us_up/This article intended to address not just current compensation case, but also the general assumption that Tevez kept us up singlehandedly. Don’t get me wrong, Apache is an absolute legend, there’s no player I would rather see in Claret and Blue. However, it undermines West Ham, and ...

Great - just not in the trophy-winning sense
http://www.footballingworld.com/ 2008/ 09/ 30/ great-just-not-in-the-trophy-winn…Twice in little over a week, Arsenal have scintillated with their trickery, their passing, their finishing and their youth. Had the performances been consecutive, it would seem there was nothing this side could not achieve. But the fact 6-0 and 4-0 wins were sandwiched by a humiliating home defeat to Hull City rather serves to rein in the hyperbole.

Sheffield and the Derby Dales
http://toque.co.uk/ blog/ ?p=1273Mrs Toque and I have returned from an extremely pleasurable weekend oop north. Apart from a brief excursion down to Berwick-upon-Tweed when we lived in Edinburgh it was Mrs Toque’s first visit to the north of England, and she liked what she saw. “Actually, I really like the north”, she said, surprised.

Catching Up on a Week of News
http://www.dailyfungo.com/ 2008/ 09/ 29/ catching-up-on-a-week-of-news/Every time I sat down to write about a bit of Tigers news in the past five days, another shoe would drop and I’d think “I’ll write about both of those items.” Then another and another, etc. So, as I wait out this Tigers/White Sox rain delay from bright, sunny Phoenix, it’s time to weigh in on: Todd Jones’s Retirement.

Don’t stand so close to me
http://www.bugsandcranks.com/ the-clubhouse/ patrick-smith/ dont-stand-so-close-…As of right now - 2:54 PM eastern - the Tigers and the White Sox are in a rain delay at the Cell. As you know, the game means everything to the White Sox. The game means nothing to the Tigers. In fact, it means less than nothing to the Tigers. It’s an annoyance, one more day in a miserable, underachieving purgatory of a season.
