Turkey's in the news again and, as usual, the news is not good. Yesterday gunmen attacked the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, killing three policemen. News is often negative, because it is by definition a recording of things outside the norm. But Turkey seems to suffer more bad news than most countries.

Murat Kurnaz on 60 Minutes Tonight on 60 Minutes on CBS, there will be another story besides the long awaited Al Gore interview. Murat Kurnaz, a German of Turkish origin, who was detained (and tortured) at Guantanamo Bay, even though he was completely innocent, and with no connection to terrorism.

With Turkey’s Constitutional Court due to rule on whether to ban the ruling Islamist-rooted Justice and Development (AK) party, the country’s political fault lines are growing deeper. They pit the AK against Turkey’s decades-old secular establishment, which includes the military and parts of the judiciary.

More arrests have taken place in the Ergenekon case of a criminal gang charged with assassinations of public figures and plotting to overthrow the elected government. The criminal network is suspected to have links in the Turkish military and bureaucracy.
