Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attacked the Mohawk people at the Tyendinaga/Deseronto reclaimed quarry on Friday, April 25, 2008, arresting as many as 10 people and pointing guns. Solidarity blockades, actions and demonstrations took place in Six Nations/Caledonia, Akwesasne, Kahnawake, Guelph, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver over the following four days.

A proposal from Chemainus First Nations member George Harris to rename Georgia Strait the Salish Sea in recognition of the land’s original inhabitants is getting some serious consideration from the BC provincial politicians (UPI).

I wore my Salish Sea socks today.  I don’t know if it is the design, or if I have finally figured out how to accomodate for my loose gauge.  The tops do not slouch down.  They weren’t tight when I put them on, either.  Is it the mystery of Cat’s design?  I am anxious to see  if anyone else feels the same.

Without exception, smell has a powerful effect on us people. Smells can make your mouth water, or, likewise, make you gag. Smells can be seductive, invigorating, calming, or irritating. But for all of us, scent, more than anything else, brings to memory people, places, and events in our lives and revives the full array of emotions surrounding those memories.

I had the privilege this week of interviewing Isabel Hawkins, an astronomer and director of the Center for Science Education at Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. We talked about how people use evidence in science, how it is that we know what we know. Hawkins isn’t your ordinary astronomer.

The Captain and I are staying the night at his sister's house, because her girlfriend (who has a host of fascinating yet life-threatening medical issues) is spending the night at the hospital with dangerously low sodium levels.
