Was reminiscing with some fellow fans of Irwin Allen’s oft maligned sci-fi series... rival to Gene Roddenberry’s more cerebral (and infinitely more successful) Star Trek series. Of note... the episode “The Great Vegetable Rebellion” in which the crew was held hostage by an anthropomorphic carrot.

What can I say? Irwin Allen was an influence in my life before Gene Roddenberry was. My parents loathed Star Trek, for reasons I still don’t know to this day, but they would let me watch Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea on Sunday nights. I think that was because Dad liked to watch Quinn Martin’s The FBI afterward.

I started watching The Fantasy Worlds Of Irwin Allen last night, which was part of BBC4's Irwin Allen Night. I was expecting a classy BBC documentary, instead it was of those American shows with links straight out of The Simpsons...

Remember when the Lost In Space movie came out? Trendmasters made a lot of spin-off toys, but they wisely added a parallel line inspired by the original TV series. The B9 robot was the best of it all, and it's still a kick-ass toy! It's motorized, but doesn't have a corded remote control to mess up the design, or an unnecessary radio control.
