    Last week Jeff Barr from Amazon Web services came up with a great new term to describe the need to handle sudden and extreme spikes in demand by enabling a hybrid cloud computing model which combines both private data center resources and remote cloud resources such as Amazon Ec2. He called this model "cloudbursting".

    Amazon is running their second Start Up Challenge - I entered last year with my brilliant idea for a web service that would allow schools to quickly setup and scale emergency websites using Amazon S3 and EC2. I think it was a bit too niche-y, but I did get $25 in AWS credits, so that’s been a nice pile of money to play with and learn more about the system.

    All this browser innovation (not just Chrome, but also Snowl & Ubiquity from Mozilla) are great, but how quickly can this really move.. after all we still have IE. If we don’t see the innovation from IE, can we bridge it somehow to allow it to gain mass market? IE plugins? Chrome uses WebKit.

    Over at Pistachio HQ we’re a big fan of Amazon Web Services, and we’ve been using SimpleDB since day 1. However, for one reason or another we’ve needed to export our data and it turns out there’s no tools that do that… until now! It does exactly what we want it to.. get our data.

    A new version of the RightAws gem, 1.8.0, has been released and contains full support for Amazon's new Elastic Block Store (EBS). Via the RightAws::Ec2 module, users can create and delete EBS volumes, attach and detach them from instances, snapshot volumes, and list the available volumes and snapshots.
