2011 NFL Draft Grades - Round 1
The 2011 NFL Draft is the first piece of scraps (court cases and headache/vomit-inducing legal battles not included) that the billionaire owners and millionaire players have thrown to us peasant fans in a year where a season very well may not exist. So naturally, everyone was in a frenzy over this year's draft, especially the all-important (and expensive) 1st round.
Let's take a look at all the round 1 moves and grade each team's picks:
1. Carolina Panthers - Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
There are just too many questions when it comes to Cam Newton to justify him being the #1 overall pick. Will he be able to thrive in an NFL system? Will he be able to transition to a passing QB? Can he handle the complexities of a NFL offense and the speed of opposing NFL defenses? And of course, will he stay out of trouble? He does of course have some upside. He has a lot of athletic ability and a will to win and he will sell a lot of tickets and jerseys in Carolina.
2. Denver Broncos - Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M
The Broncos need ALL the defensive help they can get and with Elvis Dumervil coming back this year, Denver made a smart choice by choosing the stud LB to compliment him. Grade would be higher but Broncos play a 4-3 defense which is out of Miller's comfort zone.
3. Buffalo Bills - Marcell Dareus, DL, Alabama
The Buffalo Bills needed to address their QB situation and their worst run defense in the league situation. They decided to go with the latter. Dareus played in the 3-4 under Nick Saban and should fit right in with the Bills.
4. Cincinnati Bengals - A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
Coming into this draft I firmly believed there were 2 players that stood out amongst the rest and they just so happened to go back-to-back. Green is the first of the two. He goes to a Cincinnati team that is in shambles and quite possibly without their franchise QB. Maybe choosing Green can help woo Carson Palmer back. If not, Green will be a secure target for a young new QB to use.Continued on the next page
