Tiger Woods Statement: Did it Work for You?
Tiger Woods completed his much anticipated statement concerning his marital transgressions this afternoon. He's looking a little rough these days, a lot more like his father, in an open-collar shirt, suit combination that looked too big for him.
For all of its heart-felt-iness, a statement like this is only one step and a billion dollars away from The Jerry Springer Show. This is none of our business. It begs the question, why should we care?
And the answer ever available to Springer is available to Tiger too: I don't know, but you do care.
So why is Tiger making it our business? Because of business.
Don't over look its one mention in the short monologue: "My behavior has caused considerable worry to my business partners."
Indeed. So why did you need to come tell us all this?
He answered that one: "There are many people in this room, and there are many people at home who believed in me. Today I want to ask for your help. I ask you to find room in your heart to one day believe in me again."
This was a sales pitch for "Brand Tiger Woods," plain and simple, scripted by others, performed by Woods. Nothing wrong with commercial activity per se. Question is, whether this rather cynical approach is compatible with personal transformation.
We'll see--that's one thing I'm sure of because that's good business too.
