Students Socialize Walk-Out
There are loads of causes and groups to get behind on Facebook. Whatever your cause is, there's a Facebook page for it. — that includes organizing a high school walk-out in protest of recent education cuts.
The event, which was embraced by thousands of high school students, was organized by Michelle Ryan Lauto, an 18-year-old Pace University student who once attended high school in New Jersey. Lauto was the maestro behind the call to action after Governor Chris Christie announced that he would cut $820 million in funding, according to a Hartford Courant report.
As a result of Lauto, roughly 15,000 students RSVP’d “Yes” via Facebook. Despite not knowing how many actually participated, The Star Ledger reports that students from several schools joined in the walkout.
Mashable is reporting that students who took part in the protest used social networking efforts, such as texts, MySpace and, of course, the original Facebook Event, to spread the word.
The call to action's originator, Lauto, tweeted about the walkout, expressing her joy at the turnout and the media attention.
