Popular Blog Engadget Shuts Off User Comments
Hugely popular tech blog Engadget has flown in the face of traditional blogging culture and shut down the ability for visitors to leave comments.
According to the site, the move is temporary and being made to shake out "some of the trolls and spammers." While I can certainly understand their reasoning (dealing with that stuff is a major pain in the ass), I can't help but wonder if this is the beginning of something that may ultimately lead us back to the major media model of one-way information flow that gave rise to powerful blogs in the first place.
How ironic that would be, as those huge old-school media outlets continue to embrace the community aspect of the Internet to a greater degree every day.
