Facebook’s Timeline is a step towards that direction. Facebook hopes that through "frictionless sharing" it will be able to collect enough data about its membership base to divine what they would like to buy. In time it might actually get there, but right now Facebook suffers from an accumulating litany of woes. On its own none of them is sufficient to become the de facto reason for Facebook members to desert the social network en masse. Collectively, however, it is a war of attrition and as disenchantment accumulates, it may well be that it is something as small as having ads you did not expect popping up on your wall that may become the proverbial straw for Facebook users.
