Admittedly, I’ve been sucked into it. I get a rush when my Technorati Authority creeps up a few points, and I'm bummed when it drops. I know I can boost it by blogging about popular topics, but does that mean I’m contributing to the conversation? Not necessarily – I’m just riding the wave of the moment. Yet, there was a time when I was happy to influence a single person I respected or someone seeking my input.
The immediacy and pace of social media are seductive. I happened to be online shortly after Steve Jobs died. I was no more or no less informed than the next guy, but I admit, I felt a sense of victory in that I was among the early announcers of the news. I knew it was building my brand and lending credibility to my social presence. I suppose that made me relevant last week. Probably this week I’m not.
